Rodent Odor Removal Service

Rodent Odor Removal Service

The rodents are gone. The smell isn’t. Pest control removes the infestation. We remove the rodent urine and droppings odor left in your attic, walls, and framing.

Serving California since 1989

Getting Rid of Rodents and Getting Rid of Rodent Odor Are Two Different Services

This is the most important thing to understand, and most people don’t find it out until after the pest control company has left.

Pest control companies are experts at getting rid of rodents — trapping, exclusion, sealing entry points. Many also clean and disinfect the soiled areas, and some clean wall studs and rafters after removal.

That handles the infestation. It doesn’t always handle the odor.

Once rodent urine and droppings have soaked into insulation, structural framing, and drywall, cleaning and disinfecting the surfaces may not eliminate it. Odor can remain absorbed in the materials and continue releasing long after the infestation has been eliminated.

We don’t do pest control. We come in after the infestation has been dealt with, to remove the odor it left behind.

When You Need an Odor Specialist — and When You Don’t

Minor infestations

Usually don’t require an odor specialist. If the pest control company cleaned up and the smell is gone, you’re done.

Severe or long-term infestations

These are different. When rodents have been nesting, urinating, and leaving droppings in the same areas for months or years, the contamination goes into the structure. That’s when the smell survives the cleanup — and that’s what we treat.

Signs the Odor Is in the Structure

  • The rodents are gone but the house still smells
  • The smell is strongest in rooms below the attic or next to affected walls
  • It gets worse on hot days, when the attic heats up
  • Cleaning and disinfecting reduced the smell but didn’t eliminate it
  • The odor has a sharp, ammonia-like quality
  • It comes back after air fresheners or odor sprays wear off
  • You’ve had a long-term or repeat infestation in the same area

If the smell outlasted the infestation and the cleanup, the source is in the building materials.

Where Rodent Odor Lives

Attic insulation

The most common location. Rodents nest in insulation and leave urine and droppings throughout it. Contaminated insulation holds odor and has to come out.

Rafters, ceiling joists, and top plates

Rodents travel along the framing in the attic. Under the insulation, the wood is often stained and saturated along their routes.

Wall cavities

Rodents move through walls between floors and rooms. Urine soaks into studs, plates, and the back of the drywall — out of sight, and out of reach of any cleaning done from inside the room.

Drywall

Both the back side facing the cavity and ceiling drywall below attic nesting areas. See our drywall urine odor removal page.

Subfloors and crawlspaces

Rodents in crawlspaces contaminate the underside of the subfloor and the joists supporting it. See our subfloor odor sealing page.

Rodent contamination soaks into framing and insulation, well beyond what surface cleaning reaches.

Pest control finished but the smell is still there?

The pet odor inspection finds where the urine and droppings went — attic, walls, framing, or subfloor.

Why Cleaning and Fragrance Don’t Solve It

Cleaning and disinfecting are the right steps after an infestation — they remove what’s on the surface. Where urine has soaked into insulation, raw wood framing, and the back of drywall, surface cleaning doesn’t reach it.

Fragrances and odor sprays cover the smell for a while and then fade. We don’t use them. When we finish, there’s no masking scent — the odor source has been removed or sealed.

What We Do

  • Rodent odor removal
  • Rodent feces removal
  • Rodent urine removal
  • Contaminated insulation removal (if not already done)
  • Disinfectant application
  • Dead rodent removal from a known wall location
  • Drywall odor encapsulation
  • Stud and wood odor encapsulation
  • Attic and wall-cavity contamination treatment

How We Handle Rodent Odor

Before pest removal: ask your pest control technician. If your home is about to undergo rodent removal, ask the technician to advise you of any structural odor damage they see. It helps us scope the job — and it’s worth considering a pest odor inspection at the same time.

  • Forensic inspection. We locate the contaminated areas — insulation, attic framing, wall cavities, subfloors, and drywall — and determine how far the urine has gone.
  • Itemized estimate. You get a line-by-line estimate by email before any work begins.
  • Remove the contamination. Contaminated insulation, droppings, and nesting material come out — if they haven’t already been removed by your pest control or insulation company.
  • Clean and disinfect. Affected surfaces are cleaned and disinfectant is applied.
  • Seal with the Odor Encapsulator. Contaminated studs, rafters, joists, and drywall are sealed with our Odor Encapsulator so the odor can’t release back into the home.
  • Then reinstall insulation. New insulation should go in only after the treatment has cured — usually a few days. We’ll give you the timing for the conditions on site.

Dead Rodent Odor — When the Location Is Known

Sometimes a rodent dies inside a wall. If you know which wall the odor is coming from, we can handle it.

We remove the drywall at the source, remove the dead animal if it’s found, clean out the wall cavity, apply disinfectant, and treat the framing members with our Odor Encapsulator to eliminate the odor.

What we don’t do: we don’t search the house for dead animals or open walls trying to locate an unknown source. The location needs to be known before we start.

The 5-Year Odor-Free Guarantee

Our 5-Year Odor-Free Guarantee applies to qualifying structural surfaces that are properly exposed, prepared, and treated with the Odor Encapsulator System. If the original urine odor returns from those treated surfaces due to the same contamination we remediated, we return and re-treat at no additional charge during the guarantee period.

It doesn’t cover new infestations, untreated areas, concealed materials the customer elected not to expose, or work performed by others. The guarantee applies to the original contamination on qualifying treated surfaces. New contamination from reinfestation is not covered — so keep the exclusion work maintained.

Other Pest Odors

Rodents are the most common, but the same structural odor problem happens with other pests. Rats, birds, and raccoons can all leave urine and droppings that soak into attic and wall framing.

We treat the odor only — and only once the animals have been removed. Removing the animals is a job for pest control or wildlife removal.

Questions We Get

Do pest control companies get rid of rodent odor?

Pest control companies are experts at removing rodents, and many clean and disinfect soiled areas. When urine and droppings have soaked into insulation and framing, cleaning may not eliminate the odor. That’s a separate service.

Do you do pest control or trapping?

No. We’re an odor remediation company. We come in after the infestation has been handled, to remove the odor left in the structure.

The rodents are gone. Why does it still smell?

Rodent urine and droppings soak into insulation, raw wood framing, and drywall. Removing the rodents and cleaning the surfaces doesn’t always reach what’s absorbed into the materials.

Does every infestation need odor remediation?

No. Minor infestations usually don’t. It’s severe or long-term infestations, where urine has soaked into the structure, that need an odor specialist.

Do you remove the contaminated insulation?

Yes, if it hasn’t already been removed by your pest control or insulation company. Droppings and nesting material come out too, before the framing is treated.

Can you remove a dead rodent from inside a wall?

Yes, if you know which wall the odor is coming from. We remove the drywall at that location, remove the animal if it’s found, clean and disinfect the cavity, and treat the framing with the Odor Encapsulator. We don’t search for dead animals in unknown locations.

Do you handle bird or raccoon odor?

The odor, yes — once the animals have been removed. Removal itself is a job for pest control or wildlife removal.

When can new insulation go in?

Only after the treatment has cured — usually a few days. We’ll give you the timing for the conditions on site.

Do you use fragrances?

No. We don’t mask the odor. We remove or seal the source.

What does the guarantee cover?

Qualifying structural surfaces properly exposed, prepared, and treated with the Odor Encapsulator System, for five years, against the return of the original contamination we remediated. It doesn’t cover new infestations.

Get an Odor Inspection
